Wynwood
While I am and always will be a city kid at heart ,it's always good to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the concrete jungle and get away for a bit. With that being said , I finally decided to take a much needed vacation and headed down to the sunny beaches of Florid. Ok... maybe not as sunny as I would've liked since I decided to visit during the beginning of hurricane season when the weather decides to become unreasonably bipolar, but thanks to good company, still managed to make the best of a vacation. While I didnt get to take in the scenery of south beach , thanks to a friend of mine i did get a chance to visit the art district of wynwood.
Here's a quick rundown about wynwood . It was initially an old industrial district that was main seen as a ghost town of sorts. However due to a revitalization period in 2009 by the late Tony Goldman who's vision helped turn Wynwood's old dilapidated and abandoned warehouses into the walk in museums of art that you seen today , but also convincing the public to embrace graffiti and street art in way that it has never been seen before.
Since its inception ,Wynwood has hosted artist not only from the United States but from other contries worldwide including Brazil , France , Mexico and Japan just to name a few. Just looking at some of these murals you can tell these artist went all out and used every nook and cranny of the space they were given to create some of the sickest mural pieces ive seen in a while . While the town has become every artist's playgound to display their work , I like the fact that the town incorporated street art as a part of their revitalization and restoration efforts . Kind of shows you how the power of street art can gain the attention not only of the art community but also supported by locals and business alike .
So while everyone is talking about live crowd and celebrity sightings of Art Basel in downtown Maimi , the town of Wynwood is really the place to be if you're a graffiti and street art fan . Definitely make a trip if you can . Special shout to my friend Hadassah not only for being a gracious host but also my personal tour guide through Wynwood. Check out some of the pics in the gallery.
